Sedation dentistry options for uneasy patients

It is common for patients of all ages to fear visiting the dentist. Sometimes the sights, sounds, or even just someone in one’s personal space can make them feel on edge about their upcoming dental appointment. Dr. Khaja Mohsinuddin and the Total Health Dental team work with patients of the Aurora, Illinois area who have mild to severe dental anxieties. That is often when our team will recommend sedation dentistry options available to make a dental visit a positive experience for everyone!

Types of sedation available at Total Health Dental:

  • Oral sedation dentistry – with the use of an oral medication prescribed to the patient, patients will feel much more at ease when they arrive for their dental appointment. The sedation wears off with time, often long after the dental visit has concluded.
  • Nitrous dental sedation – mild anxiety may be improved with nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas.” This odorless and colorless gas can help you relax and can be reversed with the administration of oxygen before patients leave the office.
  • IV conscious sedation – severe anxiety may require administration of sedation intravenously. It is done to fully relax the patient, especially if they have several procedures done during a single appointment and want to be comfortable throughout it all.

Which one is right for me?

We invite patients to be open and honest about their current dental needs and phobias so we can determine the level of sedation needed to achieve a beautiful smile and undergo extensive dental work. Patients with mild dental anxiety may benefit from just nitrous oxide. In contrast, those with severe dental anxiety—or those having several lengthy procedures done at once—might want to ask about IV sedation. Dr. Khaja Mohsinuddin and his team can educate patients on the pros and cons of each to make an educated decision regarding which one is best for their needs.
