If you’re experiencing a persistent toothache, swollen, sensitive gums, or sores in your gums, chances are you have a tooth infection. The discomfort of a tooth infection can make it hard to work, play, or sleep. When left unchecked, the infection could cause such severe damage that you could lose the infected tooth. However, if caught early, tooth infections can be treated, and your tooth can be saved through root canal therapy. Dr. Khaja Mohsinuddin and our Total Health Dental team offer root canal treatments to residents of Aurora, Illinois, and surrounding communities.
Contrary to what people think, root canals are not uncomfortable, complex procedures. Root canal therapy is a standard dental treatment performed under anesthesia, so you feel no discomfort during your treatment. Once Dr. Mohsinuddin has examined your tooth and determined it can be saved with a root canal, we’ll numb the area in preparation for your procedure.
Root canal therapy starts by drilling a hole in your tooth to access the infected pulp, which will be removed, along with the diseased nerves and tissue. Next, we’ll cleanse and disinfect the tooth chamber and canals to keep the infection from spreading. Afterward, we’ll seal your tooth with a special filling called gutta percha to protect it from further infection. Lastly, we’ll cap your tooth with a dental crown to fortify its structure for future use.
One of the most significant benefits of root canal therapy is ridding your tooth of infection to avoid extraction. This saves you the expense of replacing that tooth in the future. Additional benefits include:
