Invisalign is the leader in smile transformation. When you choose Invisalign, you are likely doing so because the treatment is discreet, convenient, and doesn’t require bulky metal wires, brackets, or other headgear, as required with traditional orthodontics. With Invisalign, you have the freedom to live your life without restrictions. Patients in the Aurora, Illinois area who visit Dr. Khaja Mohsinuddin and the team at Total Health Dental seeking help with alignment and other orthodontic issues constantly inquire about Invisalign.
One question most patients have is, “Does Invisalign cause discomfort?” The good news is that Invisalign clear aligners are more comfortable than traditional braces. But that doesn’t mean you won’t feel any discomfort throughout your treatment. When you do, here are some handy tips you can follow to deal with temporary discomfort caused by your Invisalign aligner.
The freedom that Invisalign gives you to eat and drink what you want is one of the great benefits the treatment offers. However, as you start your treatment or when you first put on a new aligner, you may experience some discomfort. When this happens, it may help to stick to softer foods until this
discomfort disappears.
Using an ice pack or cold washcloth on your face can help reduce any discomfort caused by your aligner. Hold it in place for 10 minutes several times a day until the discomfort goes away. You can also drink ice-cold water to soothe any discomfort you may be feeling. Try sucking on an ice cube (but don’t succumb to the urge to chew it!).
Your Invisalign aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours a day. If you keep to this schedule, you should be replacing your aligner every two weeks. Wearing an aligner longer provides no added benefits. On the flip side, not wearing your aligner enough can prevent your teeth from moving on schedule, and your teeth may not adjust to the aligner properly, leading to some unnecessary discomfort.
We hope these tips will help when you find yourself facing discomfort caused by your Invisalign aligners.
